Two directions, two different jobs

"SVG converter" covers two jobs that work in opposite directions, and it helps to know which one you need.

• Image to SVG is tracing. A PNG or JPG is a grid of pixels. Turning it into an SVG means finding each color region and outlining it with curves, which is what the converter above does. The result scales to any size and opens as editable shapes in Illustrator, Inkscape, Figma and Cricut Design Space.
• SVG to image is rendering. An SVG already holds shapes. Turning it into a PNG means drawing those shapes at a size you pick, which is exact and quick. SVG to PNG renders at 256, 512, 1,024 or 2,048 pixels wide.

A real SVG, not pixels in a wrapper

Some converters take a shortcut: they put your original pixels inside an SVG file and hand it back. The file ends in .svg, but it is still a bitmap, so it blurs when you enlarge it and can't be recolored shape by shape. You can check any SVG in a few seconds by opening it in a text editor. A traced SVG is made of <path> elements, rows of numbers that describe curves. A wrapped one holds an <image> element with a long block of base64 text.

Getting a clean SVG

• Start from the biggest, sharpest file you have. The converter smooths out blur and JPEG noise, but it can't invent detail that isn't there.
• Pick the mode for the artwork. Color for logos and illustrations, B&W for ink on paper, Centerline for line art a machine will follow.
• Drop the background. Tick Transparent background so a plain white or colored background doesn't become a rectangle behind your design.
• Leave Colors on Auto first. It finds the real colors and ignores edge blur. Set a number only when you want fewer or more shades.
• Clean up under Advanced. Raise Despeckle if tiny specks show up, and lower Smoothing to keep hard corners.
• Check before you download. Zoom in on the compare view, and turn on Outlines to see the paths the file will hold.

Where it falls short

• Photos. There is no true vector of a photo. On Auto you get flat bands of up to 24 colors, and often a file bigger than the JPG.
• Gradients and soft shadows turn into steps of flat color.
• Tiny text in a small image comes out lumpy. Trace the biggest version you have, or retype the text in your editor.
• PDF, AI and PSD files can't be read directly. Export a PNG first.
• One image at a time. There is no batch conversion.
